Sorry for the long lapse in posting.  Things have slowed down a bit since we finished the floor and the sidewalks.  Our summer has been spent repairing brick work which is a slow tedious task.

The finished work is beautiful and will be stable for years to come.

The Town got busy and laid the curbs

We are so appreciative of their hard work.  Now we can get busy on filling in with dirt and planting grass.

This past week we have ramped it up a bit by gutting the wooden structure on the back of the building.

This has been backbreaking work with over 150 years of dirt.  Masks were definitely in order.

A couple interesting discovery's were made.

Not sure who decided to put their initials on the building but they wanted to be noticed for posterity, unfortunately no one knows who they are.

A cistern was uncovered in the strangest of places, close to the back of the brick building in the wooden structure.  And no it was not part of an out house.  Cisterns are common with old structures to retain water run off.  We used to own a house that had one.  Beautifully and expertly lined with brick.  Would have made a great wine cellar if it were bigger.

Of course it will have to filled in before a new floor can be laid.  We estimate it about 10 -12 feet deep.  Maybe there is hidden treasure.

Before we started to remove the subfloor

Thousands of feet and horse hooves have stepped over this threshold.

Old buildings have a "feel" about them.  You wish that walls could speak or play out the scenes of days gone by.  To feel the history of a building is comforting in a way.  Even though structures are temporary, they are reminders of lives that have filed through them.  To save a building means that hopefully more generations can pass through and make their own mark.
Until our next post.  Cheers!
